Dental Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns because they can be used on a damaged or decayed tooth that needs to be repaired but does not require a full crown.

Inlays and onlays can be used in situations in which a tooth is decayed, but some of the healthy enamel of the tooth remains. The inlay or onlay will be custom-made to fit the missing parts of a tooth and to reinforce and complete the original tooth.

Inlays and onlays are more conservative teeth restorations than metal fillings and the white porcelain used is often the material of choice for moderate to small tooth damage or cavities because it provides:
  • Nearly natural matching tooth-color (unlike metal fillings)
  • A tight seal with the remaining original tooth, which aids in prevention of further decay
  • Strength and reinforcement to the tooth structure
  • More conservative removal of healthy dental tissue
  • A longer lasting repair to the tooth than metal amalgam
